Kika was one of six people killed in an attack on a community football match by armed assailants. At least 15 people were also injured in the attack.
Asociación Silueta X, an organization dedicated to defending the rights of LGBTIQ+ people and an active member of Federación Ecuatoriana de Organizaciones LGBT+, expresses its deepest condemnation of the chilling massacre that occurred on the night of Sunday, October 12, on calle 22 and Cristóbal Colón in southwest Guayaquil.
This brutal attack, which left six people dead and at least 15 injured – including two teenagers aged 14 and 16, and a six-year-old child – adds to the wave of violence that has hit our city during the Independence Day holiday, becoming the third massacre recorded in recent days.
The incident occurred during a soccer tournament and community activities organized by residents of the area to celebrate the 205th anniversary of Guayaquil's independence. More than 150 people were gathered in a festive and joyful atmosphere when a group of hooded gunmen stormed the site in two cars and a three-wheeled motorcycle, unleashing a hail of bullets.
Among the victims of this massacre was Kika, a 40-year-old trans woman, originally from the area and well-known in the LGBTIQ+ community of Guayaquil. Kika was no stranger to these activities; on the contrary, she was an active member of the soccer championship, fostering spaces of inclusion and solidarity in a neighborhood marked by marginalization and discrimination. Her presence there was not accidental: like many trans women in Guayaquil, Kika fought daily against stigmatization, poverty, and structural violence, while building support networks for her peers.
Kika's death is a devastating blow to the soul of the entire trans community, which already lives under the yoke of discrimination, unemployment, and a lack of state protection. How many more Kikas must we lose before the state recognizes transfeminicide as a specific crime and acts urgently?
