Suspect arrested in murder of gays (SF Examiner, CA, USA, 1975-04-30)

San Francisco police announced a breakthrough today in a string of homosexual murders in the downtown area during the past year.

Homicide Lt.Charles Ellis, who announced the breakthrough, said that one man has been arrested and another was expected to be arrested within hours.

Raushee Onez, 32, was arrested at 3 a.m. today and booked for two killings, one last Friday and one last November.

The Tenderloin area has been searched for months by police looking for a knife-wielding killer who attacked transvestites in their rooms.

Areas frequented by transvestites have been circularized with posters warning "Drag Means Death," including gory photos of the victims.

The San Francisco Tavern Guild, an association of gay bar operators, and the Helping Hands Center have posted a $550 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killers of two transvestites, Donald Vasquez, known as Barbarella, and Joseph Rodriguiz, known as Yancey Linda.

Onez is not charged with either of these slayings.

At least one other slaying was known to fit the patterns and police were checking to see if other killings may be connected.

Police, however, refused to elaborate on their investigation for fear of jeopardizing their case.

Onez was accused of two killings, the deaths of Roger Carey, 42, of 180 Turk St., who was found stabbed to death last Friday night, and Francis Nelson, 75, found, slain at 580 O'Farrell St. last Nov. 11.

The string of killings had terrorized the Tenderloin area for months. In the Tavern Guild poster, possible witnesses were urged "to bring to justice the savage killers ... Do not remain silent . . ..You may be the next victim of these animals.
